First decide whether the two figures describe the same thing

The International Aluminium Institute's methodology is designed to support harmonized cradle-to-gate carbon footprints for primary aluminium and precursor products. That common approach is useful, but a buyer still has to confirm what each supplier actually included. A smelter-only value, a primary-ingot footprint and a finished prepainted-coil footprint describe different product systems.

Request a seven-part evidence pack with the RFQ

A certificate title or a single intensity value cannot replace these fields. If suppliers use different boundaries, keep the figures side by side with their differences disclosed; do not silently normalize them with an unsupported adjustment.

Separate primary metal from coil coating and delivery

For prepainted aluminium, upstream metal is only one part of the finished-product story. Rolling, pretreatment, primer, topcoat or backcoat, curing, slitting, yield losses, packaging and any included transport should be identified. The same primary-metal factor can lead to different finished-product results when product mass, coating build, electricity source, yield or boundary changes.

The practical release question is therefore not only 'what is the aluminium footprint?' but 'does this declared result cover the product and stages in our order?' If only upstream metal data is available, label it as an input rather than presenting it as a verified footprint for the coated coil.

Use CBAM as an applicability branch, not a marketing shortcut

The European Commission states that the definitive CBAM regime applies from 1 January 2026 and includes selected aluminium goods. Importer obligations depend on matters such as the goods, customs classification, destination, importer status and current rules. A generic product page cannot determine whether a specific coated-aluminium shipment is in scope.

If an EU movement may be relevant, have the importer or a qualified trade adviser confirm the CN code and reporting obligations, then use the current Commission guidance and templates. Product carbon-footprint evidence and CBAM embedded-emissions data may overlap, but they are not interchangeable by default.

Qihao perspective: keep the carbon file tied to the technical order

From a prepainted-aluminium manufacturing and procurement perspective, carbon evidence becomes more usable when it follows the same identity chain as the technical specification: supplier, site, base metal, alloy/temper, coating build, product code, lot and delivery. This reduces the risk of attaching a valid report to the wrong product configuration.

Qihao recommends adding one evidence-status column to the normal technical review: confirmed for this batch, representative but not batch-specific, secondary/default data, or not yet supplied. That distinction is more informative than forcing every supplier response into a single unqualified number.

A five-step comparison and release workflow

  • Freeze the product specification and intended use before comparing environmental data.
  • Collect the seven-part evidence pack and record every missing or non-comparable field.
  • Compare only results with aligned functional units and boundaries; otherwise show the boundary difference explicitly.
  • Confirm separately whether a destination-specific rule such as CBAM applies to the customs code and transaction.
  • Map the accepted report or declaration to the purchase lot and retain the version used for the decision.

Can two low-carbon aluminium figures be compared directly?

Only when they describe equivalent products and align on functional unit, lifecycle boundary, data period, data quality, allocation method and verification status. Otherwise, disclose the differences instead of ranking the numbers.

Does a primary aluminium footprint cover prepainted aluminium coil?

Not by itself. Check whether rolling, pretreatment, coating, curing, slitting, packaging and any transport are included. If they are excluded, treat the primary-metal figure as upstream input data rather than the finished coil's footprint.

Does every aluminium order require CBAM data?

No. Applicability depends on the destination, customs classification, transaction and current rules. The importer or a qualified trade adviser should confirm the specific shipment; do not infer coverage from the word aluminium alone.

Is recycled-content evidence enough to prove a lower product footprint?
