The short answer: control four variables together
Whether a color-coated aluminium coil remains usable after delivery depends on more than the paint formulation. The European Coil Coating Association (ECCA) frames storage guidance around preventing physical damage and premature corrosion of the metallic substrate. In practice, that means keeping the coil dry, avoiding condensation, using stable supports and separating lifting equipment from the finished surface.
Packaging is a protective aid, not a reason to seal a coil as tightly as possible. Capillary action can draw water between laps, and wrapping that prevents moisture from escaping can prolong the problem. Purchasing, transport, warehousing and fabrication therefore need one connected handover plan rather than an external-package check performed after delivery.
How moisture, support and pressure become avoidable scrap
ECCA also warns that pressure within a coil can create marking, and a small dent on the outer lap may extend into the coil. Its list of EN 13523 methods includes Part 24 for pressure marking and sticking, including effects such as gloss transfer, plasticizer migration and colour change. The test method evaluates a defined property; it does not replace proper supports or stacking controls at the site.

A six-step receiving and warehouse checklist
- Before unloading, match the purchase order, coil number, specification, quantity and package labels; link each coil to photographs, transport documents and later inspection records.
- Before opening the package, record tears, rain exposure, wet coil ends, edge impact and visible dents. Isolate an exception and preserve the condition rather than hiding it with a new wrap.
- When a coil moves from a cold or outdoor environment into a warm warehouse, avoid sealing it immediately. Provide ventilation and watch for condensation; confirm any conditioning time or processing temperature with the supplier's product information.
- Place the coil on a clean, smooth support that will not hold standing water. Use a suitable stillage or pallet and keep the coil off the floor.
- Protect hooks, forks and coil edges during lifting. Do not drag coils; leave clearance between coils and follow the packaging and safety instructions before deciding whether stacking is allowed.
- Keep bands and protective packaging in place until the material is needed, but do not create an airtight enclosure. Use FIFO with the manufacture date, film condition and supplier instructions in view.
Put the storage interface into the purchase order
EN 1396:2023 identifies packaging, coil-axis position and special packing requirements as matters that can be agreed between purchaser and manufacturer. It also treats the type, thickness, adhesion, formability, tear strength and light-fastness of a temporary protective film as application-dependent choices. The more specific this interface is, the easier it is for the carrier, warehouse and fabricator to hand over the same material without changing the rules at each step.

Qihao perspective: storage is part of the material plan
From a color-coated aluminium manufacturer's perspective, storage and transport should not be an afterthought once the coating, dimensions and colour have been chosen. Qihao recommends confirming the downstream processing schedule, lifting method, possible temperature changes, available pallets or stillages and front-face protection during the enquiry and order review. That turns “we will protect the surface after arrival” into a workable handover condition.
This is Qihao's observation and recommendation based on public industry guidance and general manufacturing practice. It is not a performance promise for a particular coil, coating or storage period. Packaging, coil orientation, protective film and use-by guidance still require confirmation against the order specification, transport route, warehouse conditions and product technical information.
Scope: storage guidance is not a durability conclusion
Good moisture and handling control reduces risks introduced during storage and transport; it does not prove that a material is suitable for a particular building, industrial or outdoor environment. Alloy and temper, pretreatment, coating construction, cure, downstream forming, cut edges and actual exposure can all affect service performance.
ECCA's EN 13523 overview covers separate characteristics such as film thickness, gloss, colour, humidity, condensation and pressure marking. Buyers should choose methods and acceptance limits for the actual use, then state them in the approved sample, order and inspection plan. A standard number by itself is not an automatic guarantee of an unstated property.

Frequently asked questions
Should a color-coated aluminium coil be sealed completely?
Not as a universal rule. Wrapping can reduce transport and handling damage, but ECCA advises keeping coils dry and avoiding condensation; the wrap must not prevent moisture from escaping. Confirm the package and ventilation arrangement for the product, transport route and warehouse.
Can a cold coil go straight into a warm warehouse or processing line?
Do not apply one fixed time to every product. Avoid closing the coil immediately, provide ventilation and watch for condensation. Then use the supplier's technical information to decide when to open or process it and at what conditioning temperature.
Can color-coated aluminium coils be stacked?
Do not decide from the coil weight or package appearance alone. Stacking increases bottom-coil pressure, handling and safety risks. Follow the coil orientation, pallet design, coil weight, support and packaging instructions before allowing it.
What storage and transport requirements belong in the purchase order?
At minimum, define coil orientation and restraint, pallet or support, wrapping and ventilation, protective-film conditions, coil and date traceability, records for wetting or impact, stock rotation and the route for isolating exceptions. Product-specific values and periods require confirmation in the contract.
